Ukraine has the worst record in Europe for human trafficking. According to figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Belarus and Moldova also top the list of European countries with the largest number of “live commodities” for heavy agricultural labour, prostitution and begging. IOM experts say that these countries pay too little attention to combating organized crime and corruption resulting in this slave trade. According to their estimates, these post-Soviet countries, together with Rumania and Bulgaria, each year “sell” at least 225 thousand slaves. These figures do not correspond with official statistics. In the last few days, the Ukrainian Department for fighting crime stated that over the last year they had uncovered 376 crimes connected with human trafficking.
