The Prosecutor states that the decision over regional status is not within the competence of the Regional Council and is in contravention of the Constitution

The Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office has lodged an appeal with the court against the decision of the Donetsk Regional Council to give Russian “regional language” status.

According to the Prosecutor for the Donetsk Region Oleksy Bahanets, the decision over regional status is not within the competence of the Regional Council and is in contravention of the Constitution.

The hearing has yet to be scheduled.

[PL – the Prosecutor might also have mentioned that it has scant regard for the spirit and letter of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages!]
