The Pechersky District Court in Kyiv has refused to allow a civil suit claiming that the decisions by the Kharkiv and Mykolaiv Regional Councils to give Russian the status of a regional language were unlawful.

The claim had been lodged by Nasha Ukraina State Deputies Viacheslav Koval and Yaroslav Kendzior.

The Deputies also appealed against the failure of the Prosecutor General who had not reacted to these decisions.

The Mykolaiv Regional Council declared Russian to have regional language status on 29 May 2006 and an analogous decision by the Kharkiv Regional Council came on 3 July 2006.
