The Russian scientist Igor Sutyagin, recognized a political prisoner by Amnesty International, has been transferred to the camp punishment cell [SHIZO] for three months, his lawyer Anna Stavitskaya told reporters on 11 March.

“Igor Sutyagin has been placed in a punishment isolation cell for three whole months, supposedly because they found a mobile telephone on him. I don’t believe this”, Ms Savitskaya said.

The scientist is serving a 15 year sentence in an Archangel penal colony having been convicted of “state treason”.

In autumn 2003 the head of the section on military technology and military – economic policy of the U.S. and Canada Institute in Moscow was accusing of “working for American intelligence”. On 7 April the Moscow City Court found Sutyagin guilty and sentenced him to 15 years hard labour.

Sutyagin’s defence lawyers lodged an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The Court has already addressed questions to the Russian Government with regard to the complaints from Sutyagin’s lawyer. The Russian Government has until the beginning of June to respond.
