Kyiv’s Mayor prohibits campaigning tents

02.09.2007
Leonid Chernovetsky says he will not “allow Kyiv to be turned into a battleground for political opponents” and claims the tents create disorder. Various political factions have already reacted angrily and say they will take him to court

Leonid Chernovetsky , Mayor of Kyiv, has prohibited the erection of any campaigning tents in the city regardless of which political faction they are supporting. In his words: “I will not allow Kyiv to be turned into a battleground for political opponents”. He said that such tents created disorder on the city’s streets, as did the rubbish left behind by people attending political rallies.

Mr Chernovetsky said that the ban was binding on all political factions without exception.

The Party of the Region’s Kyiv headquarters has come out strongly against the ban, while the bloc “Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defence” [NU-NS] have warned the Mayor that he faces criminal liability for infringing electoral legislation through this ban.
