Travel in privacy

12.11.2007

The relevant government committee has supported a draft Cabinet of Ministers Resolution which will among other things abolish the need to give names and other passport details on railway tickets. The only exception will be in the case of people who are entitled to concessions.

As reported here, the need to provide passport details has been of concern to human rights groups because of the threat to individuals’ privacy.  Such concerns were particularly heightened by the fact that the law enforcement agencies had demanded information from railway staff about the travel arrangements of individual members of the public.

The proposed changes also include imposing greater liability for officials in maintaining order on the railways and observance of regulations.
