The course on running civic campaigns and defending human rights was part of a programme run by the Chernihiv Civic Committee for the Protection of Human Rights and the Belarusian Helsinki Committee

A course on running civic campaigns and defending human rights took place from 21 – 23 December in Chernihiv. It was attended by more than 20 Belarusian activists.

Among the topics addressed during the school were the following:

  • the situation with regard to democracy and human rights in Ukraine and Belarus
  • strategy and types of activities of nongovernmental organizations
  • promoting civic interests
  • international mechanisms for protecting human rights
  • defending the right to free assembly

The presenters were Volodomyr Weisman from the International Helsinki Federation, Volodomyr Chemerys, Director of the “Respublica” Institute; Volodymyr Yavorsky, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union; Kateryna Tarasova, Head of the Foundation for the Promotion of Court Justice.

The event was part of a three year joint programme run by the Chernihiv Civic Committee for the Protection of Human Rights and the Belarusian Helsinki Committee with the support of the European Commission.  It is aimed at promoting the development of civic society in Belarus and cooperation between civic groups in Belarus and Ukraine.
