Lesya Gongadze: Try those who ordered my son’s death

06.03.2008
Georgy Gongadze’s mother believes that the men presently on trial accused of killing her son are slaves of the system and had to carry out orders that came from above

Lesya Gongadze has said in an interview to the Western Information Corporation that she doesn’t want the three men now on trial accused of carrying out the murder of her son to face long sentences. She explains: “In my opinion, they are slaves of the system and had to carry out orders that came from above”

Ms Gongadze said that the three defendants might not have even been implicated in the murder of her son.

She stressed her position once again that it was first and foremost those who ordered the killing who should be tried, not those who carried it out.

Ms Gongadze said that since the beginning of the court examination of the “Gongadze case” she had been called to the court 98 times but had only once attended a court hearing. She plans to attend the hearing scheduled for 11 March and express her view of the case. At this hearing verdicts are expected against the three men accusing of killing Gongadze (a fourth is on the run).
