Human rights prevail in Lema Susarov case
The Kyiv District Administrative Court has declared wrongful the decision of the Prosecutor General allowing the extradition of Lema Susarov to the Russian Federation.
The Prosecutor Generals office has already revoked its decision and released Mr Susarov from custody.
The court ruling was yesterday, however in any case involving a person in custody it is wise to hold fire before reporting to avoid any harmful consequences.
A HUGE congratulations to Lema Susarov, of course, and to his lawyer, Oleh Levytsky, who has been involved since the start in making sure that a terrible miscarriage of justice did not take place. Oleh works for the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Unions Fund for the Defence of Victims of Human Rights Abuse.
It should be mentioned that a number of human rights organizations in Ukraine came out in defence of Lema Susarov, as did the Human Rights Ombudsperson Nina Karpachova whose representative argued together with Oleh Levytsky on Mr Susarovs behalf against three representatives of the Prosecutor Generals Office.
Lema Susarovs case was defended by the UNHCR, the Ukrainian Diaspora, Amnesty International, lots and lots of concerned people - to whom a big thank you.
