Humiliating treatment of Ukrainians on German-Polish border to be investigated

01.08.2008

The disgraceful incident involving Ukrainians working abroad at the border between Germany and Poland was reported widely. Dozens of workers have been deported and subjected to humiliating searches due to discrepancies in legislation within the Schengen zone. The incident is to be reviewed during the next few days by the visa group of the European Union.

The address to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Employment and Social Policy was initiated by Larissa Fedoriv, a Deputy of the Lviv Regional Council.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted swiftly sending a note of protest demanding that the German authorities looked into the incident.

According to Ms Fedoriv, such cases are not isolated.  She mentions a group of Ukrainian athletes who were subjected to the same treatment on that very border crossing. She says that they even slit their sports shoes. Another such incident apparently occurred with a doctor working with children suffering from cancer. On returning from Hamburg, she was stopped and even handcuffed, and had all her things taken away. It should be said however that the German who had been hosting the doctor immediately protested to the Bundestag. She was thus not deported and an apology was issued.

The original complaint was over the treatment of Ukrainians on the Madrid – Wroclaw coach who were returning from Spain where they had been entirely legally working picking fruit. The coach was stopped a few kilometres from the border to check documents and eight women and two men were subjected to humiliating treatment.
