Sandarmokh 1937

27.10.2008

71 years ago between 27 October and 4 November 1937 1,111 prisoners of the Solovky Labour Camp were executed in accordance with a quota at the Sandarmokh Clearing in Karelia. .

Among the 290 Ukrainians were the creator of the theatre “Berezil” [“March”] Les Kurbas; the playwright Mykola Kulish, the poet Mykola Zerov and very many other prominent artists, scientists and public figures.

The killings neither began nor ended then and the Sandarmokh Clearing holds the last earthly remains of thousands of victims of the regime.

There are no new words, only enduring memory.

As always, a memorial gathering will take place in Kyiv on 27 October (at 18.00 near the Memorial to Les Kurbas on the intersection of Prorizna St and Pushkinska St in Kyiv).

If you are far from there, perhaps you too would like to light a candle in memory of all the victims.
