The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union is warning against the planned extradition to Moldova of Gabriel Stati and Auren Marinescu who are accused of trying to seize power during the anti-government protests in Chişinău (Kishinev).

As UHHRU Executive Director, Volodymyr Yavorsky told the Ukrainian Service of Deutsche Welle, if Moldova has not until now been considered a country where there is a danger of human rights abuse, then following the street protests this has all changed. “In my opinion, it is dangerous at present to hand these people over to Moldova. According to our information two people have already died in police custody after beatings.”

Yavorsky said that UHHRU had not made a formal approach to the Prosecutor General regarding the extradition since neither those detained, nor their relatives, had approached Ukrainian human rights organizations for help.

Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksandr Shynalsky announced yesterday that they were planning to grant extradition. He said that the two could be handed over on Thursday.
