Worrying twist in the conflict at the Yanovska Factory

28.07.2009

The employers, the closed joint stock company “Yanovskoye”, have lodged a law suit against the organizers of the strike begun after employees had been paid for less than three of the last six months.

The first hearing was held on 27 July. The respondents are the head of the regional branch of the All-Ukrainian Workers’ Union, Yury Khoklov, the heads of the trade union and strike committees for the factory Anatoly Moskalev and Inna Antropchenko.

The employers are demanding that the strike which began on 6 July be declared unlawful and the employees forced to return to work, and that court costs be paid by the respondents.

According to Yury Khokhlov, “the workers have fulfilled all commitments, the strike has been suspended, yet the management are not meeting us halfway. Up till now they have paid only 17% of the wage arrears for April and half for March. The heads of the factory are not sitting down at the negotiating table and we have not been given a schedule for paying the money owed. And now they’ve taken out a law suit, and are continuing to heat up the issue.”

As reported here, the strike began on 6 July, with the workers seeing no other option having not been paid even half the outstanding wages for the last six months, despite the fact that the factory brought in considerably more money. No social security payments at all had been made for half a year.

The employers immediate response was to attempt to dismiss the organizers. Please see http://khpg.org.ua/en/index.php?id=1247834920 and links below the text there for more information. There had seemed some chance after an emergency meeting of the City Council on 16 July that the conflict might be resolved. The Council fully supported the striking workers, finding their demands entirely legitimate. They ordered the owner to pay all wage arrears and arrears to the social security funds within a week.

Unfortunately there is no end in sight and the next hearing is scheduled for 31 July.
