Prosecutor General asks US for forensic analysis in Gongadze case

Valentina Telychenko, lawyer for Myroslava Gongadze, widow of the murdered journalist, has informed the press that the Prosecutor General has sent a request to the appropriate US State institutions for assistance in carrying out forensic tests abroad of the fragments of skull believed to belong to Georgy Gongadze. Ukrainian experts confirmed yesterday that the DNA matched that of the journalist, abducted in 2000.  However Myroslava Gongadze is insisting that the forensic analysis be carried out by a forensic institute in the USA. Ms Telychenko expects this to take around 2 months.

As reported here on numerous occasions the investigation seemed to have ground to a halt after three former police officers were convicted of carrying out the killing, but on the orders of their boss, General Pukach who was in hiding.

In July Pukach was arrested in a village in the Zhytomyr region, and it was he who apparently told the investigators where to look for the skull remains.

Pukach has supposedly also either promised to say who ordered the killing or has already said. Gongadze’s family, as reported here, have treated these claims with scepticism.
