The Head of Ukraine’s Committee of Voters believes that Europe is responding passively and closing its eyes to certain violations of the law and Constitution because of weariness with the “Ukrainian issue” and bearing in mind Ukraine’s present pro-Russian foreign policy.

In its monitoring report, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe [PACE] plan to formulate the Council of Europe’s position regarding procrastination on setting a new date for local elections in Ukraine.

According to Ake Peterson, Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, members of the PACE Monitoring Committee will be speaking with high-ranking public officials in Ukraine regarding the cancellation of the local elections, and why a new date has still not been set. He said, however, that no date has yet been fixed for such meetings.

Oleksandr Chernenko, Head of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine [CVU] believes that Europe is responding passively to things happening in Ukraine because of weariness with the “Ukrainian issue” and bearing in mind Ukraine’s present pro-Russian foreign policy.

“Unfortunately the western world is presently closing its eyes to certain violations of laws and the Constitution in Ukraine, and is being extremely cautious.”

Mr Chernenko assumes that there will probably be no local elections this year given that no funding has been set aside in the Budget. Regional elections can at best be set for March 2011 if amendments are made to the Constitution, however he warns that such changes in the near future cannot be guaranteed, since the politicians are playing according to rules that suit them, and not according to the law.
