Environmentalists call on UEFA to stop violations in Kharkiv “for the sake of EURO-2012”

What is needed for EURO 2012? At present four people have been unwarrantedly detained, four beaten badly and hospitalized, two injured by the excavator. As of Friday morning, EIGHT peaceful demonstrators have been detained and taken to a police station.

The National Ecological Centre of Ukraine [NECU] and other prominent environmental groups have turned to the heads of UEFA and organizing committee for EURO 2012. They call on them to take measures to stop the destruction of Kharkiv’s Gorky Park and the mass beating of Kharkiv residents endeavouring through peaceful protest to protect the park.

The city authorities, including the Acting Mayor, H. Kernes are justifying the tree felling as necessary preparation for EURO-2012.
