Italian human rights campaigner visits Gorky Park defenders’ camp

29.07.2010

This is the first visit by a representative of foreign human rights and environmental organizations who came to see with his own eyes what is happening. Michele Curto is the President of the international human rights network FLARE (Freedom, Legality and Rights in Europe) which is involved in social struggle against the Mafia and international organized crime.

Mr Curto had only an hour to view the construction work and the camp, as well as to speak with the defenders of the trees and burials.  He said that even a non-specialist like himself could see that the work was being carried out incorrectly, and that the workmen were committing infringements in order to finish on the specified date. He noted particularly that the layer of road metal was too thin.

He explained that he had come to meet with the activists, then if there was a need, he would seek a meeting with the authorities.

He asked for documents in English to show the Council of Europe, UEFA and the European Greens and recommended that they make direct contact with the latter.

After the meeting Michele Curto gave a press conference where he stressed that it didn’t matter which politicians were involved, if there had been violations of the law this was something that should concern civic society.
