Parliament to consider moratorium on media outlet checks during election campaign

On 6 October the Verkhovna Rada is to consider Draft Resolution No. 7100 “On ensuring unobstructed activities by the media during the election campaign of 2010”, as well as two media draft law on strengthening safeguards for freedom of speech

According to Andriy Shevchenko, Head of the Committee on Freedom of Speech, this week, most likely on 6 October, the Verkhovna Rada is to consider Draft Resolution No. 7100 “On ensuring unobstructed activities by the media during the election campaign of 2010”, as well as two media draft law on strengthening safeguards for freedom of speech.

On Wednesday the Deputies are to consider the draft resolution, as well as two draft laws (No. 6447 tabled by Arseny Yatsenyuk, and 644-1 by Olena Kondratyuk, both on amendments aimed at protecting freedom of speech). Andriy Shevchenko says that his Committee reached consensus over the bills.

The authors of the proposed moratorium on checks of media outlets, registered on 7 September, are members of the Parliamentary Special Committee set up to investigate cases of censorship in the media.
