Court extends Yury Lutsenko’s imprisonment

The court has kept unchanged the preventive measure applied against former Minister of Internal Affairs and leader of the People’s Self-Defence Party, Yury Lutsenko, i.e. remand in custody. Its grounds for this are not revealed.

The next hearing is scheduled for 27 May.

The court apparently also took the decision that the case will be examined in all parts involving documents constituting a State secret in closed regime.

The applications to have the case examined by a jury, to terminate it and to release Lutsenko from remand pending trial, were all rejected.

Before the court went into the consulting chamber all were removed from the courtroom. After the judge return and read the decision, the police and court staff refused to admit any lawyer and the majority of journalists.

Yury Lutsenko said after the court hearing that he saw nothing surprising since the Pechersky District Court in Kyiv “was always engaged and obeyed the Head of State”.

Before the judges retired to the chamber, Yury Lutsenko announced that he was stopping his hunger strike.
