A journalist who writes for the information agency Poryad z vamy [By Your Side], Yulia Horodetska was set upon by a police officer on Friday 9 June.  The officer grabbed her camera phone and tried to erase the recording that Yulia had been making in a public area.

The incident took place on Friday evening, around 7 o’clock when the journalist by chance witnessed police officers detaining a man who was lying on tram rails. She began filming the incident on her camera phone, in full accordance with the constitutional norm guaranteeing free gathering of information. After the policeman grabbed the camera phone, Yulia objected, informing him that she was a journalist and asking to see his identification. He refused to give his name or ID, and, she says, returned the equipment only when he believed he had erased the video footage. He also said that she could take films only with the permission of their press service.

According to an Institute for Mass Information lawyer, Ukrainian legislation does not require Ministry of Internal Affairs Press Service permission to film a police officer.

The information agency Poryad z vamy believes that the police officer exceeded his official powers and obstructed her legitimate activities, and is demanding that an official investigation be carried out.
