The selective use of justice in Ukraine could have a negative effect on the ratification process after the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira has said.

"We’re holding talks on the association agreement. They are very important for Brussels and Kyiv. At the same time, serious risks arise because of the selective use of justice, " he told journalists in Kyiv on Monday.

Mr Teixeira said that the EU leadership regularly informed the Ukrainian authorities regarding the risk of an adverse impact of certain events in the country on the ratification process.

He also noted that Ukrainian legislation left over from the Soviet era - the Criminal Code in particular - should be changed in order to meet European standards.
Speaking at a meeting on relations between Ukraine and the EU, Mr Teixeira stressed that if the association agreement is signed this year, then in 2012, the process of ratification will begin in all 27 countries of the EU and the European Parliament. It is therefore important that in Ukraine all problem areas are resolved, that reforms continue and also that all interested parties are able to take part in the future parliamentary elections.
