No journalists invited to work on Public Morality Act

The authors of a bill on Amendments to the Public Morality Act have proposed creating a Working Group to prepare the bill for its second reading.  The letter sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Speech proposes only National Deputies and the Head and other members of the present National Expert Committee on Protection of Public Morality.  Not one representative of the media or independent civic organizations would be invited to take part.

The draft law has aroused criticism from both within Ukraine and abroad over the potential it creates for censorship through the back door. The civic movement Stop Censorship warns that censorship could be introduced in Ukraine under the guise of protection of public morality and is collecting signatures against the bill, while the International Federation of Journalists has said that it “represents a serious threat to press freedom”
