At a joint press conference with President Yanukovych in Kyiv, Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaite stated that the outcome of the EU-Ukraine Summit would depend entirely on resolution of the situation with former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

President Grybauskaite said that Europe had been shocked by the decisions taken during the trial of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. She added that the feeling prevailed in Europe that Tymoshenko and her colleagues were the victims of a process of political neutralization.

Europe believes, she said, that Ukraine has still not found a resolution to political problems, especially with regard to adopting amendments to the Criminal Code. It is therefore calling on Europe to ensure a just examination of the appeal against Yulia Tymoshenko’s conviction.

The Kyiv Court of Appeal is due to examine the appeal against the verdict issued by Judge Rodion Kireyev in the Pechersky District Court on 11 October.
