US Embassy to look into allegations that Tymoshenko was beaten

25.04.2012
US Ambassador to Ukraine, John Teffl has said his Embassy will be looking into the allegations that the former Prime Minister and opposition leader was kicked in the stomach and beaten when being transported from the Kachanivska Penal Colony to a hospital in Kharkiv last week

Interfax-Ukraine reports that during a lecture to students at the Dnipropetrovsk National University the US Ambassador to Ukraine, John Teffl said that they were treating very seriously the reports about Yulia Tymoshenko’s case.  He said that they hoped the criminal charges against her would be dropped. Asked by the students whether sanctions would be applied against Ukraine over political persecution of opposition leaders, Mr Teffl pointed out that the leaders of the US and European countries had spoke with President Yanukovych about the situation. He added that there was serious concern and disappointment that the persecution was continuing, but would make no comment about sanctions, saying no decision had been taken.

Mr Teffl said that the US Embassy would be looking into the allegations that the former Prime Minister and opposition leader had been kicked in the stomach and beaten when being transported from the Kachanivska Penal Colony to a hospital in Kharkiv last week.

Ms Tymoshenko has stated that she is on hunger strike in protest.
