More than 60% of all applications for legal assistance to the Law Centre of the Odessa Regional Branch of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine concerned unlawful actions by law enforcement bodies, mainly the police

Thanks to the work of the Law Centre of the Odessa Regional Branch of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine [CVU] in Tatarbunari, over 150 Roma from the Odessa region have received legal advice on how to get identification documents.  15 have already received documents.(internal “passport” or ID document; birth certificate; residence permit etc). .

The Head of the Law Centre, Yevhen Hrybachov also held meetings with groups of Roma which was useful for also discussing more general problems.  Many Roma do not have original documents and most aspects of life in Ukraine are seriously impeded without them.

During the meetings held with CVU representatives, many Roma in Tatarbunari  complained of violations of their rights by the police. Those from Faraonivka in the Saratov district focused more on the local community’s social position.

More than 60% of all applications for legal assistance concerned unlawful actions by law enforcement bodies, mainly the police. This was borne out by an expert survey of leaders of Roma communities.

More such meetings are planning for June.
