Donetsk oblast: language law rallies as administrative resource?

CVU reports that pro-language law rallies have been held with people brought in by coach from other cities and reports that public sector workers were forced to attend.

The Donetsk regional branch of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine [CVU] reports that on 8 August a rally took place in Donetsk in support of the controversial Law on the Principles of State Language Policy. It was attended by more than 2.5 thousand people with Party of the Regions flags, banners reading “The Party of the Regions carries out its commitments” and Ukrainian flags.

It is most likely that the signing of the law was no surprise for Donetsk officialdom and that the rally was planned in advance. Some of the participants had been brought there from neighbouring cities by coach. In the parking area near the Regional Administration building you could see a lot of cars, mini-vans, as well as 5 coaches diverted from the No. 1 and No. 30 coaches which travel between Donetsk and Makiyivka. A CVU monitor learned from a source in the Regional Administration that employees had been forced to come to the rally from work. The City Mayor Oleksandr Lukyanenko denied that anybody was there in their working time.

There were similar rallies over the next few days in Makiyivka and Mariupol.
