A ‘military tribunal’ in the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk people’s republic’ [DPR] has passed a 10-year sentence on a 43-year-old Ukrainian for what it calls ‘spying’.  Although few details are given, it seems possible that the person is Valery Nedosekin, a college director at the Donetsk Academy of Motor Transport.  If so, then the sentence would be for tweeting photos which show Russian military technology where it has no right to be, | детальніше

Ukraine refuses to free journalist & asylum seeker facing persecution in Kazakhstan

It was because of Zhanara Akhmet’s criticism of the Kazakhstani regime that she faced prosecution in her own country and sought asylum in Ukraine, together with her small child. That alone should have precluded her initial detention, but did not, and now a second court has rejected the application from an MP and prominent human rights activist to release the journalist on their guarantee and remanded her in custody for 60 days. | детальніше

Ukraine remembers Petro Grigorenko as his words in defence of Crimean Tatars could get you arrested in Russian-occupied Crimea

It is 110 years since the birth of Petro Grigorenko, Soviet General, founding member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, victim of punitive psychiatry and defender of the Crimean Tatar people. Sentence to silence Crimean Tatar leader Ilmi Umerov on trial for words he didn’t utter

Russia’s trial on openly falsified charges of Crimean Tatar leader Ilmi Umerov has reached its squalid end, with the real aim likely to be reflected in a ban on public activities, accompanying the demanded suspended sentence. No reversion to rule of law is anticipated, although the verdict is due a day after a UN monitoring report expressed exactly the same position on Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukrainian Crimea as that for which Russia has put 60-year-old Umerov on trial. | детальніше
