Good tidings for the New Year

29.12.2007
The Ministry of Justice has revoked registration of the scandalous Order of the State Department for the Execution of Sentences which allows for the use of a special anti-terrorist unit in penal institutions and pre-trial detention centres

The Ministry of Justice on Friday 28 December informed the State Department for the Execution of Sentences that it had cancelled the registration of Order No. 167 from 10 October 2005 in the Single Register of Normative-Legal Acts. This Order allowed for a special anti-terrorist unit within the Department used for carrying out searches of prisoners and penal institutions and pre-trial detention centres, and effectively for intimidating those deprived of their liberty

The cancellation of its registration means that Order No. 167 has ceased to be in force and must immediately be revoked by the Department.

It would be unrealistic (if tempting!) to believe that the 10 steps to improving the human rights situation in Ukraine published yesterday had been heeded so quickly, however this was number 10 on the list.

Let’s hope more positive moves are on the way.
