The State-owned regional landscape park “Granite-Steppe Pobuzhya” is indeed a natural wonder, with unique wildlife and flora. It also contains monuments of historical and cultural heritage. It is under threat and your “vote” can help

Online voting has just begun in a contest to find Ukraine’s Seven Wonders of Nature.  Each of us has the chance to vote for exactly seven “candidates”.  There are 21 “finalists” and the choice will be announced on 26 August.

Rather than list a number of places you haven’t heard of, try clicking the photos at: http://7chudes.in.ua/  (help on how to vote are at the end of this text.

Of the finalists, we would like to mention one particularly beautiful area at risk and needing our help..

Why your vote is so important

The State-owned regional landscape park “Granite-Steppe Pobuzhya” is indeed a natural wonder, with unique wildlife and flora.  It also contains monuments of historical and cultural heritage, including the Gard Tract which is the last authentic landscape from the time of the Zaporizhyan Sich [the fortress of the Zaporizhyan Cossacks on the Khortytsa Island].

And a part of this park has been taken away, though an extremely suspect local authority decision and handed to the Ukrainian National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom, to be flooded and made the tail end of the Alexandrovsky Reservoir, servicing the Tashlyk Hydro Accumulating Power Station.

Like most issues there are different arguments: Energoatom has a lot of money and presents its point of view widely, and of course the power station does provide employment.

Public opposition is nonetheless great, and it is vital that this is taken into account. The flooding of this national park (which cannot be “handed over” by any local authority) will be an irreparable loss to Ukraine’s national heritage and spell the destruction of a unique landscape.

It may have no legal force, but a clear statement from the public in voting for “Granite-Steppe Pobuzhya” will help to protect this park.  Please help!
