No Presidential opinion on prisoners food parcels
In February this year the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union issued an appeal to those able to institute legislative initiatives asking that a draft law be drawn up to ensure that prisoners have the right to receive parcels without any restrictions. The issue has always been important, however has taken on new urgency given the present crisis. Prisoners need these parcels, and yet through a legal hiccup, restrictions are being imposed.
The Ministry of Justice responded and agreed, saying that given the financial and economic crisis in the country and the worsening against this background of the conditions for prisoners, the Ministry was initiating the preparation of a draft law on increasing the number of parcels.
UHHR has just received a letter from the Presidents Secretariat informing that it has sent the letter on to the Department for the Execution of Sentences, to see whether the latter agrees.
