Kyiv Mohyla Academy’s funding cut

According to Yevhen Fedchenko, Director of the university’s School of Journalism, the Ministry of Education has suspended State funding for the  Master’s programmes offered by the School of Journalism and others.

Mr Fedchenko notes that notification that funding was to be stopped came after the end of the period for accepting new applications. “Yesterday was the last day for applying, and today we were allocated 0 (State-funded – translator) places. This is with 60 people having applied for places. Many of them will be unlikely to be able to pay the 19 thousand UAH per year, without working at the same time”.

While perhaps unrelated, it is difficult not to remember the obvious conflict between the present leadership of the Ministry of Education under Dmytro Tabachnyk and the independent university http://khpg.org/en/1292198484 and http://khpg.org/en/1292847640

According to Svidomo, one of the oldest universities in the country, the Ivan Franko Lviv National University has also faced significant cuts: 36% for natural sciences, IT and History by a third, while funding of places on cultural studies, journalism and political studies courses has been halved.
