Ex- Tajik Prime Minister Abdumalik Abdullojonov has been detained in custody in Kyiv for 40 days pending a review of an extradition request from the Tajik authorities. He was detained as soon as he arrived in the country on 5 February.

Radio Svoboda reports that the Tajik politician who stood against the current President Rahmon in the 1994 Presidential elections has said that he won those elections.

He has been accused by the Tajik authorities of involvement in a 1996 assassination attempt on Rahmon.

He is also accused of backing a 1998 militant attack in Sughd Province, and of organized crime and terrorism-related offences.

The situation is entirely unclear since Mr Abdullojonov arrived in Kyiv from the USA where he has been living for the past decade.  The US authorities have apparently refused to say what status he holds because this is not their policy.  He had clearly not been in detention there.

For the past decade, he has lived in the United States.
In November 2012, Abdullojonov told RFE/RL that he had won the 1994 elections and accused Rahmon of electoral fraud.
