Conflicting assessments of Tymoshenko’s state of health

01.03.2013

German doctors from the Charite Clinic in Berlin have examined imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and “strongly advise her to continue treatment in hospital conditions”.  The Charité Clinic’s Head Karl Max Einhäupt was speaking at a briefing outside the Ukrzaliznytsia Central Clinical Hospital No. 5 in Kharkiv, where Ms Tymoshenko has been undergoing treatment since May 2012.

On 22 February the Health Ministry’s Press Service and First Deputy Health Minister Kachur announced that their special commission on Ms Tymoshenko’s state of health considered that she does not need further treatment in a hospital

Members of the commission assert that a number of the physiotherapy procedures which the imprisoned opposition leader has already received do not comply with any practice or standards. They add that such a number could have an opposite effect.

Lilia Frolova, Deputy Head of the Prosecutor General’s Office Central Investigation Department, has stated that Ms Tymoshenko should be returned to Kachanivska Prison Colony No. 5 if she no longer needs treatment, but that is up to the State Penitentiary Service.

The latter has asserted that Ms Tymoshenko is misinforming the German doctors in order to discredit Penitentiary Service staff.  They say that she claimed that she would virtually have to walk to the court hearing in Kyiv, that she would have to be sitting in an upright position for 8 hours at a time in court, and more.  They maintain that none of this is true.

The Deputy First Health Minister says that they are awaiting the German doctors’ formal assessment, due in a couple of days.  He has confirmed, however, that they have agreed with the latter that being taken to a court hearing in Kyiv scheduled for 4 March would be too arduous.
