On the eve of the seventieth anniversary of the Deportation, Russia’s FSB has carried out shameful searches of the homes of Crimean Tatars.  In Bakhchysaraj on Thursday morning the FSB searched the home of member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Ali Hamzin

Two cars filled with armed FSB officers turned up and cordoned off the house and street while the search was underway.

The search lasted over an hour, with Crimean Tatars who live in Bakchysaraj gathering near Hamzin’s home to give the family moral support.

Hamzin believes that the search is an attempt to intimidate him because of his civic and political work.

There are reported to have been other searches of Crimean Tatars’ homes.  Lutfiye Zudieva says that in Stariy Kirim they questioned 150 Muslims merely because they were wearing headscarves.
