Viktor Yushchenko wants to activate work on gaining recognition from the world community that Holodomor [the artificially created Famine] of 1932-1933 was an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people and one of the greatest tragedies of human history.

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko has instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to activate work on gaining recognition from the world community that Holodomor [the artificially created Famine] of 1932-1933 was an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people and one of the greatest tragedies of human history.

The relevant Presidential Decree was published on 12 October on the President’s official website.

President Yushchenko gave instructions for the possibility to be investigated of creating memorials and establishing memorial plaques in other countries in memory of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.

The Decree also calls for Ukrainian diplomatic offices abroad to hold measures to mark in 2006 Remembrance Day for the Victims of Holodomor and political repression, as well as to ensure the participation of the diplomatic corps of foreign states in official events taking place in Ukraine.
