As feared, a Russian court has ordered the transfer to a harsher regime colony of Mikhail Trepashkin, believed by many to be serving a four-year service for his efforts to uncover the real culprits of the 1999 apartment block bombings in Moscow.

Tagilstroevsky district court in Nizhny Tagil on 9 March 2007 changed the regime in which Mikhail Trepashkin, lawyer serving a four-year sentence on “divulging state secrets” is being held from a colony-settlement to a (harsher) general regime colony, Trepashkin’s lawyer Yelena Liptser has told the press.

The court allowed the application from the administration of the colony to change Trepashkin’s regime in connection with his “systematic infringements of the internal regulations of the colony”.

According to Ms Liptser, until the court order comes into effect, Trepashkin will be held in premises being used as a pre-trial remand centre. She added that  “the conditions there are even worse than the change in regime.”

“We will definitely appeal today’s court ruling”, she stressed. According to the law, where one of the parties appeals a first instance court ruling, the verdict only comes into force from the moment when the cassation appeal court ruling is passed. In the given case this will be the Sverdlovsk Regional Court.
