Closed trial for tortured Ukrainian accused of a ‘Crimea sabotage plot’ that never was
09.02.2018
The ‘trial’ has begun of Andriy Zakhtei, one of the four Ukrainians seized by the FSB in Russian-occupied Crimea in August 2016 and accused of involvement in a supposed ‘Ukrainian Crimea saboteur plot’. It appears that the entire ‘trial’ will be held behind closed doors, enabling Russia’s FSB to conceal the lack of a credible story, not to mention evidence .
Why Election Reform Should Be a Top Priority Now
09.02.2018
Election reform in Ukraine is finally gaining some momentum. In December, parliament passed in the first reading draft law #3112-1, which creates an open list proportional election system and makes it easier for small parties to win seats in parliament. In addition, the president’s long-awaited list of candidates for the Central Election Commission has finally been submitted.

08.02.2018
It is people like Volodymyr Balukh, spending his second birthday in prison for his unwavering loyalty to Ukraine that give the lie to Russian propaganda about Crimea and give hope that it will return under Ukraine’s control.

Poroshenko accused of creating a weapon against critical NGOs, like in Russia & Kazakhstan
08.02.2018
Ukrainian civic activists have expressed anger over public claims made by the President’s spokesperson that two contentious bills imposing extensive reporting requirements on NGOs, though not, for example, political parties, have been agreed with civic organizations

Ukrainian sentenced to life for racist and homophobic attacks
07.02.2018
A 28-year-old Kharkiv man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for racist and homophobic attacks on six people, and the killing of another young man. The case was important in that the prosecution clearly identified the racism determining Vitaly Kadnichansky’s choice of victim, as well as referring to homophobic motives. It also gained some notoriety due to the attempt by Oleh Lyashko, head of the ‘Radical Party’ to get the young man added to a list of ‘political prisoners’ in 2015, and released under an amnesty.
Russia backed Luhansk ‘republic’ bans Jehovah’s Witnesses and other ‘non-traditional’ faiths
06.02.2018
The self-proclaimed ‘Luhansk people’s republic’ [LPR] has yet again followed Russia’s lead, this time by banning the Jehovah’s Witnesses, calling them and other banned faiths ‘religious groups’. The move comes just days after the Kremlin-backed ‘LPR parliament’ passed several ‘laws’, including one aimed at hunting down and prohibiting so-called extremism in religious or political organizations, as well as in the media. .

How can OSCE observe Russian ‘elections’ that are being illegally held in occupied Crimea?
06.02.2018
There are several reasons why the event on March 18 which will give Vladimir Putin his fourth official term as Russian President can only loosely be termed ‘elections’. There is one, however, that surely invalidates any outcome since Russia is insisting on holding the elections in illegally occupied Ukrainian Crimea.

Neo-Nazi Azov fighter granted Ukrainian citizenship linked with police and far-right vigilantes
05.02.2018
Ukraine’s Interior Minister and other top officials were swift to distance themselves from the far-right vigilantes who held a frightening oath-giving ceremony on Jan 28. Both this and the public outcry were cheering. The same cannot be said for information linking yet another person holding a police post with the far-right groups behind these so-called ‘natsionalni druzhyny’.
Crimean attacked for Ukrainian symbols faces 5-year sentence for wanting police assailant prosecuted
05.02.2018
Having Ukrainian symbols on his bike was excuse enough for Ihor Movenko to be savagely beaten up in Russian-occupied Crimea. He is now facing a five-year prison sentence because he tried to get his assailant prosecuted. Human rights activists believe that Russia is promoting any form of hatred towards pro-Ukrainian Crimeans, with the ‘courts’ there to provide whatever sentence is demanded.

Another Missed Opportunity: Russia Evades Designation for Religious Repression
05.02.2018
More than ever, USCIRF believes that the United States should take a stand for the religious minorities that Russia is oppressing in Russia, as well as in Crimea and the Russian-occupied territories of Luhansk and Donetsk. The commissioners strongly recommend that Russia be designated a Country of Particular Concern for its severe religious freedom violations
Internet providers forced to conceal total FSB surveillance in occupied Crimea & Russia
02.02.2018
Any Crimean still using Russian social media like VKontakte or Odnoklassnik for correspondence should close them down immediately, preferably after deleting all personal messages and posts from the last decade. It is likely that Russia’s FSB [security service] has long had unimpeded access to Russian-based Internet messengers, postal services and social media, however a new ruling has now strictly prohibited any Internet providers from even divulging details of their collaboration with the FSB.

Russia-backed ‘Cossack’ fighters take oath in Moscow Patriarchate church to fight against the Ukrainian ‘enemy’
02.02.2018
Around 40 ’Cossack’ fighters from the self-proclaimed ‘Luhansk people’s republic’ [‘LPR’] have attended a ceremony in an Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate, claiming that it gives them “the right with rifle in hand to defend the republic”. The event on 27 January is not the first time that Moscow Patriarchate churches and their clergy are seen taking a clear and highly contentious position in the Kremlin-backed conflict in Donbas..
