Briton charged with terrorism for involvement with Kremlin-backed militants in Donbas
11.10.2016
British prosecutors have accepted that fighting on the side of the Kremlin-backed militants in eastern Ukraine falls under the UK Terrorism Act. Whether or not British national Ben Stimson can convince a UK court that he wasn’t really fighting in Donbas, the fact that he is on trial at all is an important precedent
New Russian attempt to imprison Ukrainian Library Director for ‘Extremism’
11.10.2016
The Moscow Prosecutor has proven undaunted by previous failures and is once again seeking the imprisonment of Natalya Sharina, Director of the Ukrainian Literature Library in Moscow for so-called ‘incitement to enmity’.
FSB Moves ‘Ukrainian Crimea Saboteur’ Prisoners to Russia To Hide Proof of Torture
10.10.2016
There is reason to believe that Yevhen Panov and Andriy Zakhtei, two Ukrainians held prisoner by the FSB in Russian-occupied Crimea have been taken to Russia, with this coming soon after compelling evidence was made public of the torture Panov was subjected to.

Another Crimean Tatar faces prosecution for calling Crimea Ukraine
10.10.2016
Suleyman Kadyrov, a member of the Feodosia mejlis (regional self-governing body) could be the next to face surreal ‘separatism’ charges, following an armed search linked to a Facebook post from March 2016 in which Kadyrov calls Crimea part of Ukraine. .

Russian activist detained & savagely beaten for picket in memory of Anna Politkovskaya
08.10.2016
Viktor Kapitonov was violently detained on Oct 7, when he tried to hold a legal solitary picket in memory of Anna Politkovskaya. The 20-year-old, who is disabled, was so badly injured that he is now in hospital with a broken arm, and may need an operation
10 Years without Anna Politkovskaya
07.10.2016
Anna Politkovskaya’s voice would certainly have been heard, as was Boris Nemtsov’s, over Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. It is sorely needed now also in occupied Crimea, with Russia increasingly using the same methods that it has applied for so long in Chechnya and Ingushetia

07.10.2016
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has echoed earlier warnings from human rights groups and advised Ukrainian nationals to not visit Russia. The advice came three days after journalist Roman Sushchenko became the latest Ukrainian to be seized, held incommunicado and accused of mystery ‘spying’.

Russia’s Bombing of Aleppo Must End
07.10.2016
I appeal to the people of Russia, Europe, and the rest of the world not to stand idly by, but to spread the word and voice their outrage. An outpouring of public opinion could induce President Putin to put an end to his heinous crimes against humanity.
Russia uses secret court to keep Mustafa Dzhemiliev’s son hostage for an extra 3 years
06.10.2016
A Russian court has ordered that the son of veteran Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemiliev be kept under ‘administrative surveillance’ for three years after his scheduled release on Nov 25. This effectively increases the young man’s sentence, with the ruling passed at a hearing which Khaiser’s lawyer was not even told about
Memorial Society declared ‘foreign agent’ for criticizing Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine
06.10.2016
In the latest move in its mounting offensive against civil society in Russia, the Justice Ministry has declared the renowned International Memorial Society a ‘foreign agent’. The four grounds cited include the fact that Memorial had publicly called Russia’s actions in the East of Ukraine military aggression.
Stop Mistaking Russia for Europe
06.10.2016
Mistaking Russia for Europe is a gift to its president in other ways. Because popular knowledge about Russia is ultimately superficial and limited, Putin is free to craft an image of himself abroad as a decisive, steadfast father to the nation at a time of growing fragility in Western democracies
Monitoring on territories beyond the control of Ukrainian authorities
05.10.2016
During the monitoring mission, the participants (members of the “Memorial” Human rights centre) visited the territories which are beyond the control of Ukrainian authorities two times: 16-24 of May 2016 and 3-9 of June 2016.
Ukrainian savagely beaten in Russian-occupied Crimea punished, not his attacker
04.10.2016
No criminal proceedings were brought against the man, probably a police officer, who brutally attacked Ihor Movenko over Ukrainian symbols and an ‘Azov Battalion’ sticker on his bike. Only Movenko has faced a court hearing and fine
Why Ukraine acquits 10 times less often than in Stalin’s Soviet Union
04.10.2016
It had seemed like an indictment of Viktor Yanukovych’s presidency when in 2012 the number of acquittals by Ukrainian courts came perilously close to zero. The statistics for 2015 are not that much better, with part of the problem lying in idiotic rules and methods of measuring police and judges’ achievement
