Send a Signal of Solidarity to Belarus

15.06.2007

The Belarusian authorities have now begun a campaign to remove satellite antennae in their latest moves to stop Belarusians from watching world television channels as well as the independent Belarusian channel “Belsat”.

To mark Belarusian Solidarity Day on 16 June, the civic initiative “Solidarnist” will be holding a protest action near the Belarusian Embassy to call for an end to the flagrant violation by the Belarusian authorities of the right to freedom of expression and access to information in Belarus.

During the action, the Ukrainian activists will present a street theatre demonstration of how Lukashenko’s regime is fighting independent television.

The signal of solidarity will be launched on 16 June 2007 at 13.00 near the Belarusian Embassy (Kyiv, Kotsyubynsky Street, 3).

All are cordially invited to attend.

A reminder

Since September 2005, on the 16th of every month at 20.00 in Belarus, people have been turning their lights off and burning a candle in their window.

The sixteenth was chosen in memory of the opposition figure Viktor Honchar and his friend Anatoly Krasovsky abducted on 16 September 1999 in Minsk.  Neither was ever seen again.  They are not the only victims of Lukashenko’s regime.

Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians will light candles in memory of those who disappeared and in affirmation of their right to freedom and fundamental human rights.

Their action will be supported by people in other countries of the world.
