OSCE experts believe the main factors to be the Chernobyl Disaster; military ammunition which has not been destroyed and toxic wastes

Experts from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have concluded that only six percent of Ukraine can be deemed environmentally clean.

They believe the main factors to be the Chernobyl Disaster; military ammunition which has not been destroyed and toxic wastes. TV STB reported the experts as saying that the remaining part of Ukraine’s territory has become a dumping ground for topic substances inherited from the USSR.

According to the environmental experts, there are 5 billion tonnes of toxic substances. The OSCE says that this is one of the main causes for soil and water contamination, as well as problems with health of the local population.  At the end of May, OSCE experts stated that Ukraine was experiencing an environmental crisis. They reported that the country holds approximately 2.5 million tonnes of military ammunition from Soviet times which must be destroyed. They also recommend creating 4 storage units for radioactive waste.
