Anna Politkovskaya – a year on

In Kyiv, on the first anniversary of Anna Politkovskaya’s murder, a moment’s silence will be held in memory of the Novaya Gazeta journalist and human rights defender who was murdered by a hired killer on 7 October 2006. 

We probably all remember hearing the terrible news a year ago.  There is no need here to explain who Anna Politkovskaya was and all that she meant for the people in Chechnya and elsewhere who came to her when they could find no justice elsewhere.

And all that she meant to those who have seen freedom of speech eroded in Putin’s Russia and all too many journalists gunned down.

If you are in Kyiv, come on Sunday, 7 October at 20.00 to the gates of the Russian Embassy at Povitroflotsky Prospekt, no. 27.  A moment’s silence will be held in memory of a person who meant a very great deal to us all.
