Human rights activists win important case for freedom of assembly

A successful civil suit lodged by two human rights defenders has succeeded in quashing restrictions on peaceful assembly imposed by a local authority in contravention of the Constitution. Since violations of freedom of assembly in Ukraine are often due to such unlawful decisions by local authorities, the impact of this ruling will hopefully be major.

In view of the unprecedented court order and atttitude of the city authorities, the civic movement “Narodna samooborona” [“Peoples Self-Defence”] will hold a rally in Kharkiv on 16 March, but not on the central Freedom Square, but on “Sobornist” Square

The Dzherzhynsky District Court in Kharkiv has banned any stage being set up on Freedom Square. The suit was lodged by the city authorities who demanded that Fridays rally with Yury Lutsenko be banned.
