Civic organizations in the Volyn region with a human rights focus have decided to join forces and formed the Volyn Human Rights Group.

Chair of the Council of Human Rights Organizations, Mykola Nikityuk explains:

“The Volyn Human Rights Group will be made up of civic organizations, law offices, media representatives and all those wishing to affirm Ukrainians’ dignity and ensure their constitutional rights.”

He reported that on 9 February the Council had met with the Head of the Volyn Regional Administration Mykola Romanyuk and formally stated their plans. They also discussed a Programme for safeguarding rights and freedoms, and also the work of law enforcement agencies on protecting human rights and reviewing citizens’ appeals.

Mr Nikityuk explains that the programme is designed to unite the efforts of human rights organizations in the region and deputy commissions of local councils in preventing human rights abuse, fighting corruption, and carrying out effective public control over the work of the law enforcement agencies, as well as raising legal awareness amongst residents of the area.

Mr Romanyuk acknowledged the importance of these tasks and stressed his willingness to cooperate with the civic organizations.
