Ukrainian scientists say that the mortality rate in Ukraine is the highest in the world. Among the reasons they give are smoking, alcoholism, but also a lack of spiritual values. The fact that five million have died over the last 15 years is agreed by all to be abnormal. The Chair of the National Council on Healthcare under the President, Professor Mykola Polishchuk is disturbed that this excessive mortality rate is typical of working-age people and says that these figures are four times higher than is normal in Europe. In comparison with what he calls civilized countries, life expectancy is 15 years lower.  According to the experts, the most common cause of death is smoking, with this taking over 100 thousand lives a year, and then alcoholism, claiming a little less than half this number. They also add injuries. Mykola Polishchuk is convinced that these are the result of a lack of spiritual values, low awareness and a low cultural level. The experts also mention the large number of people migrating.

The Director of the Institute of Demography Ella Libanova points out that 65 percent of new-born males do not reach the age of 65. She says that to maintain the nation,  10 Ukrainian women should give birth to 23-24 babies, yet the actual number of births is only 13. She comments that “Ukrainian women do not want to give birth – they’ve gone beyond the family and want to fulfil themselves in society.”
