The annual trip to pay homage to victims whose unmarked graves lie in the Sandarmokh Clearing had particular poignancy on this seventieth anniversary of the unleashing of the Great Terror. At the beginning of the Second World War in July 1941, the Bolsheviks executed more than one thousand people in the Ternopil prison. Their remains lie in a common grave at the Mykulynetske Cemetery

From the coordinator of the UK-based Holodomor.org.uk site, campaigning for the UK to recognise Holodomor as an act of genocide. It is indeed unseemly to hide behind alleged “disputes among academics” when asked to respond to a tragedy and injustice of the magnitude of Holodomor.
In memory of the victims of communist repression at the Salina Clearing

The tragedy of Salina is one with that of Bykivnya, Sandarmokh and Babi Yar. They tried to wipe the memory of this tragedy from the face of the earth, to make it forgotten, driven from peoples minds. However it moved and continues to move our hearts with one short word: REMEMBER!

It was members of Odessas Memorial Society and organizations for former victims of repression who succeeded in establishing that the remains of up to six thousand people are those of victims of political repression. It is believed that the mass executions took place in 1937.

It is fitting that we should be united at this time in honouring every innocent victim of Soviet crimes. Yet while the truth remains sketchy, the graves hidden, and pitifully few details known about the true scale of the Terror and its victims, can we truly speak of honouring their memory?

Those attending the annual remembrance ceremony at the “Bykivnya Graves” near Kyiv include relatives of the over 150 thousand victims buried in this place. There are also many who to this day do not know where the graves of their relatives lie.
