22.11.2007
The Co-Chair of the organization “Voice of Beslan” is facing administrative liability for placing a “road sign” reading “Putins Course” pointing to the school in Beslan where 331 people died in 2004, more than half of them children
Djong Koun Tchona, the North Korean seeking asylum in Russia is for the moment safe
19.11.2007
Warm congratulations to our Russian colleagues, great respect for a couple in Vladivostok who didnt turn away when help was needed, and some serious questions as to how representatives of law enforcement agencies could have been involved in this planned illegal deportation

PLEASE help us by using any media contacts you have ensure that this letter reaches those in Russia who have the power to prevent a grave injustice from being committed.
The Prosecutor doth protest too much
16.11.2007
It is very important at this time that media attention is focused on Mikhail Trepashkin. We were not able to achieve his release from a politically motivated sentence. At least lets ensure that the public eye keeps him safe now as his term of imprisonment comes to an end
How Russians view their human rights situation
14.11.2007
The results of this survey by the respected Levada Centre found that while 72 % believed that human rights are violated in Russia, the number of people who considered that Russia has political prisoners had fallen since 2004 against the percentage of “dont knows”
Grave fears that Djong Koun Tchol is in imminent danger of illegal deportation from Russia would appear to be warranted.
13.11.2007
It is crucial that media and public attention are focused on any such attempts to infringe Russian legislation and its international commitments, and to send an asylum seeker back to a country where his life could be in danger.
Russias Novaya gazeta closed in Samara
12.11.2007
The Chief Editor of one of the few remaining hard-hitting newspapers in Russia (a branch of the paper Anna Politkovskaya worked for) links the closure with the coming elections

There are grave fears that the FSB and other authorities may be planning to secretly pass Djong Koun Tchol to the North Korean in violation of Russian legislation and international law
A brief autobiography
05.11.2007
The author of these autobiographical notes is Uzbekistan national Mukhammadsolykh Abutov who served eight and a half years in Uzbekistan labour camps for his religious beliefs. This document requires no commentary; it needs only to be read – and please pass it on to others

The Russian authorities and NGOs

Over the last year and a half since amendments were made to the law on NGOs, virtually all organizations who have faced checks, and the number of such in the country runs into the thousands already, have lived under threat of closure
30 October 2007 – remembering Soviet and todays political prisoners
30.10.2007
While any person remains imprisoned in the countries of the former Soviet Union, this day should be not merely a day of remembrance, but one of active protest
No plans to surrender
29.10.2007
The website Human Rights in Russia is now temporarily available to all its readers at the following address: http://hro1.org. The scale and technical sophistication involved in the attack suggest a very deliberate onslaught on a major human rights resource and information network
Belarusians recall the victims of 1937 and demand the release of political prisoners
28.10.2007
Up to two thousand people marched under national flags through the city honouring the memory of the tens of thousands of Belarusian victims of Stalins repressions in the 1920s and 1930s buried in the Kuropaty Clearing, and demanding an
Positively despairing
27.10.2007
Putin wishes to focus on “achievements” as do we. The most “positive” achievement, however, will be a society able to reject lies and disinformation, prepared to face and learn from its own history
“Memorial” publishes information on victims of the Stalin repressions
26.10.2007
Clearly very many people in Russia do not see the Terror as something better not mentioned, as certain leaders appear to believe
Russian human rights defenders fall victim to cyber-warfare
26.10.2007
The attack on Russias largest human rights website has proved especially persistent, ferocious and menacing for us all. The following is therefore recommended reading. We would also, however, stress that we need to show a united front in this war which is being foisted on us all and help in any way that we can
