Ukraine in seventh place in Europe for cases of tuberculosis
Ukraine is in the group of countries with a high level of tuberculosis (81 cases per 100 thousand head of population). It is in seventh position in the WHO European region after Russia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Moldova and Kazakhstan.
According to Olena Yeshchenko who is on the Committee on Countering HIV/ AIDS and other socially dangerous diseases, in 2007 there were 498 thousand people registered in anti-tuberculosis units. 643 thousand have the disease, with 93,195 people having an active form of tuberculosis. The worst figures for the spread of tuberculosis are in the south-eastern regions of the county – in the Kherson, Kirovohrad and Luhansk regions.
