Meeting in Moscow in Memory and Outrage over the murders of Markelov and Baburova

At midday 20 January a meeting took place in Moscow at the place where lawyer and human rights defender Stanislav Markelov was gunned down, and his companion, Anastasia Baburova was fatally injured.
According to various reports there were around 3 thousand people present, and many other meetings took place in other Russian cities.
The meeting in Moscow was attended by members of Memorial, Amnesty International, the Moscow Helsinki Group and many others, as well as by the Russian Human Rights Ombudsperson Vladimir Lukin.
Yury Orlov stressed that the killing was at once challenging civic society, and evidence of the state of Russian society and the State which cannot protect its own citizens.
