Finally … the right of religious organizations to land fixed in law

30.01.2009

On 30 January the President signed the Law “On amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine regarding the right of religious organizations to permanent use of land sites”.  The text is posted on the President’s official website and comes into force from the day of publication. The relevant law was passed by parliament on 15 January this year and stipulates that religious organizations registered in Ukraine shall receive the right to permanent use of land on condition that they do not use these for business purposes.

As reported here several times, similar draft laws were consistently rejected by parliament for some time. The issue is an important one given the legacy of the Soviet era and confiscation of religious organizations’ property.  The land in question is obviously that in State or municipal ownership.
