UN human rights experts offer help in investigating Natalya Estemirova’s murder

The seven experts note that while the Russian authorities have promised to make every effort to find the killers, they have demonstrated their inability over recent years to organize effective and unbiased investigations into the murders of human rights defenders.

Seven prominent UN experts on human rights have issued a statement in which they offer their assistance in investigating the human rights defender’s murder. They note that while the Russian authorities have promised to make every effort to find the killers, they have demonstrated their inability over recent years to organize effective and unbiased investigations into the murders of human rights defenders.

Among those signing the statement were the Special UN Representatives on Investigating Extra-Judicial Killings Philip Aston, and on Combating the Use of Torture Manfred Novak.

Natalya Estemirova was murdered last Wednesday after being abducted in broad daylight from a Grozny street. She had worked for the Memorial Human Rights Centre for almost 10 years and played a vital and irreplaceable role in ensuring that disappearances, killings and tortures were investigated and that the world learned of them. Memorial has stated that it sees no alternative but to suspend its work in Chechnya.
